QEX: A Major European Leap in Quantum Research
The Department of Chemistry is thrilled to share that Denmark is playing a central role in establishing the European Quantum Excellence Centre (QEX), a ground-breaking initiative under the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. QEX will drive cutting-edge research in quantum software and algorithms, positioning Europe at the forefront of global quantum innovation.
The centre will be co-managed by Denmark and the Netherlands, with significant contributions from Ireland, Spain, and Germany.
Backed by Denmark’s 1.2 billion DKK national quantum strategy (2023-2027), QEX aims to translate research into real-world applications, bridging science and industry. Danish universities (UCPH, SDU, DTU, AAU, AU, CBS) are leading the scientific charge, dedicating 440 man-months to use cases and applications—nearly half of the project’s total effort.
With a 10 million € budget (75 million DKK), QEX is set to accelerate quantum advancements across Europe.
This is a testament to Denmark’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and technological excellence. A huge congratulations to everyone involved, especially the teams at DeiC and our academic partners, for making this vision a reality!
Professor Stephan P. A. Sauer at Department of Chemistry, the point of contact from UCPH, serves on the Scientific Committee. At QMATH, Professor Matthias Christandl and Professor Albert Werner are involved in the scientific aspects of the project, while Kasper Wibeck Olsen serves on the Management Committee
